Saint-Martin-d'Oydes is a small commune located in the south-west of France, in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region and is part of the Community of communes "du Pays de Pamiers". Saint-Martin d'Oydes, a remarkable fortified site, is the only circular village in Ariège. This medieval shape, called "elliptical" or "circular", has remained completely intact. Its houses are grouped in a ring around the church. For a few years Tony Blair, then British Prime Minister, came to spend his family holidays in Saint Martin d'Oydes and even inaugurated the village's Tourist Office. He stayed in the 12th-century fortified castle... Its church and the Saint-Anastase fountain, a local pilgrimage site believed to be miraculous for the eyes.

By this road (which turns out to have a good percentage of ascent), we again take a little height. The mountains at the bend of very pretty curves on the road and in the landscape appear in all their majesty. This beautiful countryside bears the name of Pyrenean Piedmont.

By this detour, you avoid going through the road that crosses the cavity right through. It is certainly one of the most beautiful views of this unique cave.

This beautiful village is at the crossroads between the mountains and the plain. Its weekly market is really famous and attracts a lot of originals and people who live a bit on the margins of society. We thus meet a heterogeneous crowd as well as craftsmen and traders selling quality products. When the gendarmes arrive to carry out checks, out of solidarity, everyone warns each other. For that, Montbrun makes me think of a village of irreducible Gauls. Apart from Sunday which is lively, there are often deserted streets, but also the best baker in the area.

This magnificent little village is located on a height. The brick terraces of the southern part of the city overlook the Pyrenees and offer splendid sunsets. Carla-Bayle owes its name to the French philosopher Pierre Bayle, born in the village in 1647. He was a scholar and a thinker mixing skepticism and rationalism. He is the author of the famous historical and critical dictionary of 1697 which announces the spirit of the Enlightenment. So much so that encyclopaedists will hail Bayle as one of their inspirations. Here is one of his famous quotes: "The more we study man, the more we know that pride is his dominant passion, and that it affects greatness even in the saddest misery." Come stroll through the streets of Carla, you won't regret it.

A nice, easy route form Beaumont sur Lèze towards Saint Ybar. The route roughly follows the river Lèze (D74) and is a very nice alternative for the busy D4 which runs on the other side of the river and is mainly used by cars and trucks.

A nice, quiet, alternative route from Beaumont towards Lezat. Easy cycling, nice field, especially when they are covered with sunflowers. Much better then the busy D4, which follows roughly the same route.

Nice, easy route east of the river Lèze. Great landscape with almost no traffic. Follow D74 from Beaumont-sur-Lèze, all the way to Saint-Ybars.
