Once the work on the canal was finished, an administration was set up to manage navigation on the canal. Seven divisions were created along the canal. The Somail division covered 45 km. As you cycle along the Canal du Midi near Ventenac-en-Minervois, you’ll discover history, nature and vineyard landscapes. The towpath is relatively flat, making it ideal for a leisurely stroll or a warm-up before taking on the more rugged trails of the region. You’ll pass through peaceful countryside, shaded by the iconic plane trees that line the canal. Be sure to stop at the Château de Ventenac, visible from the trail, where you can learn about the region’s rich winemaking tradition.
