A stop is worthwhile

The steep climb to the church is rewarded with a very beautiful view👍😃 The church could use a little renovation on the outside. However, it is very beautiful inside and absolutely worth seeing.

Here you can look back on an incredible past. The so-called lenses are round-shaped stones that were single-celled organisms living millions of years ago.

It's hard to imagine that you're actually wading in the primeval sea near the center of Guttaring: Here, on a gently sloping slope, you'll find small, round stones that were alive around 60 million years ago. These are petrified protozoa from the ocean that once surged here. After it dried out, they were deposited in the ground as a layer of lime and marl. In Guttaring, the mini-fossils (also called nummulites) emerge on the surface. And because their shape is strikingly reminiscent of this, they were called "stone lenses". A perfect experience place for hobby geologists. And easy to reach!

The pilgrimage and branch church Maria Hilf in the village of Maria Hilf, which belongs to the municipality of Guttaring, is visible from afar at 904 meters above sea level on the hill between the Guttaringer basin and the Görtschitztal. It is one of the few consistently late baroque churches in Carinthia.
