You'll hardly notice it during your run, but when you look at your recording afterwards, you'll see it: In the Schärmewald forest, the forest paths form a heart. Cute, isn't it? :-)

The Bern Rose Garden Located high above the Old Town, the Rose Garden offers a magnificent view of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Aare River bend, the Gurten mountain, and often even the Alps. It is a popular destination with a fascinating history. Located high above the Old Town, the Rose Garden offers a magnificent view of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Aare River bend, the Gurten mountain, and often even the Alps. It is a popular destination with a fascinating history. Popular Destination with a Fascinating History / The Beginnings The Rose Garden is one of Bern's most popular parks and an important green space in a densely built-up area. When the city acquired the land of today's park on the Stalden hill, the situation was quite different. Up on the hill, there were only a few country estates. The city center was still located in the lower Old Town. Anyone wanting to travel east had to use the Untertor Bridge far below on the Aare River – the only way across – and then climb the steep ascent via the Klösterli and the Alte Aargauerstalden. The slope between Nydegg and Altenberg was dominated by the Sandfluh cliffs and their quarries: here, the Bernese extracted the sandstone they used in the Old Town and at the Minster. In 1742, the Bernese cantonal government began expanding the main roads and shortly thereafter prescribed a minimum width of 25 Bern shoes (approximately 7.3 meters) for through roads. The old Aargauerstalden road did not meet the new standards. The Piedmontese engineer Antonio Maria Mirani was therefore commissioned to build a new, wide access road from the east. Mirani routed the road along the outer edge of the Aare bend and then cut into the slope below what is now the Rose Garden. The main obstacle was the quarry, which was leveled by blasting and backfilling. Part of the Klösterli cemetery also had to be removed. As compensation, the city acquired land on top of the Stalden in 1751, thus laying the foundation for the present-day park.
