Impressive aqueduct in Portalegre

The castle was founded by King D. Dinis in 1290, with the aim of defending the Alentejo border. Originally, it had an imposing structure with a double ring of walls, twelve towers and eight gates. Over the centuries, it lost part of its structure to the growth of the city, but it remains a National Monument. The Keep is the best-preserved part of the original complex. Inside, there is a museum that you can visit.

An old, stone-paved road leads from Portagem through cork oak forests up to Marvão. A strenuous journey in summer. The scenery is breathtaking.

It connects the town of Amoreira to the city of Elvas. With a length of 8.5 kilometres, 843 arches with more than five arcades and towers that rise to 31 metres in height, it is considered the largest aqueduct in the Iberian Peninsula. It has been classified as a National Monument since 1910 and is part of the site called the Border and Garrison Town of Elvas and its Fortifications, classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 2012. Another century-old sidewalk around Marvão.

Between walls and legends of tragic love, the fields around Flor da Rosa hold memories that can be felt at every step. The Monastery, founded in 1356 by D. Álvaro Pereira, stands out as one of the most unique examples of Portuguese Gothic: a fusion of fortress and temple, a living legacy of the Order of the Hospital.

Segovia is not the only city on the peninsula to have a Roman aqueduct. The Amoreia aqueduct is located in the parish of São Brás e São Lourenço, within the municipality of Elvas, district of Portalegre, in Portugal. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 2012. The Amoreira aqueduct is part of the "Border garrison and fortifications of the city of Elvas" complex.

It's a hard climb up to Marvao and our route took us us v steep cobbles. Fine on mountain bike but hard on fully laden tandem. The main road will also get you there. Either way views from Marvao and the town itself are fabulous!
