7월 29, 2025, Restaurant de la Garde
This year we booked a room. Very comfortable size. We were able to store and charge our bikes in the shed. We only served breakfast; for dinner, we went down to the canal.

"The Mairie de Badonviller was originally built in 1811, during the Napoleonic era, and served as the administrative centre of the young municipality. After being badly damaged during the First World War, the building was rebuilt in 1924. "Located on the edge of the Vosges in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department, Badonviller is a village with a turbulent history. In the 19th century, it became a local centre thanks to the flourishing faience industry. But it was during the First World War that Badonviller became known nationwide. On 12 August 1914, the village was one of the first French municipalities to be occupied and pillaged by Bavarian troops. This event was widely reported in the French press and made Badonviller a symbol of German brutality. The village was badly damaged during the fighting and later partially rebuilt. Today, monuments, the necropolis and the townscape bear witness to this turbulent period. Badonviller is part of the 'sentiers de mémoire' — memorial routes that keep the history of the war in the Vosges alive."

"The giant Monument aux Morts de Badonviller, located next to the Église Saint-Martin, is an impressive memorial commemorating the village's inhabitants who died or went missing during the Great War (1914–1918), the Second World War, and the conflicts in Indochina (1946–1954) and Algeria (1954–1962).

6월 24, 2025, Église Saint-Martin de Badonviller
"The Église Saint-Martin in Badonviller is a rare example of religious architecture in the Louis XVI style (1788). Although it is of Romanesque origin, its elegant façade is particularly striking, which is one of the few remaining examples of this style in the Lorraine region. Together with the Chapel of the Visitation in Nancy, this church forms a unique duo. The church was badly damaged during the First World War and partially rebuilt afterwards.

War Memorial: This modest but impressive monument in Vaucourt commemorates 37 French soldiers of the 2nd Battalion of Chasseurs à Pied who died here in 1914. A second plaque honors American soldiers from WWI and resistance fighters from WWII. A silent witness to the sacrifices made in this small village for freedom and peace.

In August 1914, the quiet village of Vaucourt fell victim to the first week of the First World War. During the so-called "Wednesday", the village was attacked, bombed and partly destroyed. Seven civilians were killed. Today, the serene atmosphere of the village is a reminder of the resilience of its inhabitants and the scars of a forgotten front line.

A small relief to ride flat along the canal for a while when you come from the hilly area.

5월 23, 2025, M4A2 Sherman Tank "Mort-Homme"
"On the outskirts of Badonviller, the M4A2 Sherman tank 'Mort-Homme' stands as a powerful monument to the liberation of the village on November 17, 1944. This tank, belonging to the 501st Régiment de Chars de Combat (RCC) of the French 2nd Armored Division, was knocked out by enemy fire during the fighting for the Vosges. The tank was preserved in exactly the same place and transformed into a memorial. 'Mort-Homme' refers to a notorious hill near Verdun from the First World War, and symbolizes the sacrifice and fighting spirit of the French troops in both world wars."

The canal is worth a bike trip - although the section between Nancy and Xouaxange does not offer such outstanding landscapes.

The maintenance of such great rest areas also shows that this section of the canal is valued to a certain extent. Unfortunately, there are also completely different examples that still have a lot of catching up to do in terms of maintenance.

Unfortunately, it was a cloudy, rainy day when we arrived and everything looked a bit sad. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed - we wanted to check it out as we had planned to stay overnight here - but it was already fully booked!

11월 6, 2023, Château de Moyen
The Château de Moyen is a 15th century fortress also known as the Château de Qui-qu'en-grogne. It was built by Conrad Bayer de Boppart, bishop of Metz, to defend his possessions against the Dukes of Lorraine. The castle was besieged and dismantled several times. Today it is partly restored and partly in ruins. You can explore the remains of the castle, such as the stately home, towers, walls and moat, and enjoy the panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. The castle is open to visitors from April to October, and you can also take part in guided tours or restoration workshops organized by a local association.

Badonviller's M4A2 "Mort-Homme" Sherman tank was part of the 501st RCC, a French unit that fought under General Leclerc during World War II. It was hit by enemy fire on November 17, 1944 and has been preserved as a monument ever since. You can see the tank's name, "Mort-Homme", painted on its turret. The tank is located on Avenue du Colonel de la Horre, near the entrance to the city.

6월 10, 2023, Église Saint-Martin de Badonviller
The original church building in the Louis XVI style. was described as Little Saint Peter in Rome. The royal chief engineer François-Michel Lecreulx (1734–1812) built the building in 1787/88. Nine days after the outbreak of the First World War, on August 12, 1914, the church building burned down completely during the fighting. Reconstruction began as early as 1921. St. Martin soon had all four bells back with its remarkable round bell tower. The most powerful bell named Edith weighs 2150 kg. Its chime is reminiscent of Big Ben in London. Its organ is the work of Ernest Jacquot, an organ builder from Rambervillers. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badonviller Unfortunately, the church is mostly locked. The cemetery is above the church. Next to the church there are some rest areas and the square with its monument to the Resistance. From the edge of the square you have a view of the village. An impressive place. The mighty bells remind you of the passage of time every quarter of an hour.

More than the shelter itself, it is its location and its history that make it a special place. Beneath its modest appearance, the construction reminds us that Abbé Grégoire, icon of the French Revolution, certainly took this path to go to school in his childhood. Dating from the 1990s, the building was built in this location to take advantage of the site's point of view. The blue line of the Vosges is even visible there. If you are hiking for several days, this is the ideal place to sleep. The shelter being rudimentary, a tarp is however necessary to protect yourself as best as possible from possible bad weather.
