Visit to the abbey recommended

The patronage of this church, "Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption," refers to one of the many memorial days or feast days in honor of the Mother of God, Mary. This dates back to the feast of her bodily assumption into heaven. The (Catholic) church celebrates this feast every year on August 15th. In Orthodox churches, the feast is called the "Dormition of the Virgin Mary." In rural areas with a predominantly Catholic population, it used to be customary for the population to collect bundles of herbs on this special day and to bless them in a festive service. In isolated cases, this old custom has survived to the present day.

A beautiful city with museums.

The Notre Dame church was built at the beginning of the 16th century. by Jean de Lugny to replace a chapel built in 1346 by one of his ancestors, Girard de Thurey. Since the beginning of the 16th century. until now, the church has been parochial.

This beautiful city has a two-thousand-year history. Saint-Philibert Abbey, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, is the main attraction today. But Tournus has more than one trick up his sleeve. The bicycle museum, the Hôtel-Dieu, the old town and the colorful facades giving a Mediterranean feel are some of the gems of Tournus. Most ? A meal in one of the excellent restaurants which contribute to the influence of the town.

The town of Tournus with approximately 6,000 inhabitants, located on the banks of the Saône, allows visitors to discover its abbey and its remarkable Saint-Philibert Abbey church, a gem of Romanesque architecture. During a walk around the abbey you will discover the picturesque alleys with old houses.

From here you have a beautiful view of Saint-Philibert Abbey which is a masterpiece of Romanesque art. The monument is open every day from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
