The term "shell tower" refers to a tower that was usually open or only lightly fortified on the side facing away from the town, thus serving as a convenient defensive or observation post. In the Middle Ages, Vianden was surrounded by a ring wall with numerous towers.

A tourist source describes the chapel as the result of a church dispute between the upper and lower towns of Vianden. After Trinitarian monks settled in the upper town in 1248 and the parishes were divided in 1256, the Trinitarians took over the chapel in 1312 following the dissolution of the Knights Templar. In remembrance of the Templars, they dedicated it to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of travelers. The altarpiece in the chancel, featuring a statue of Saint Nicholas, dates from 1768.

This disused train station is located just above Bettel and just before Vianden. There is also a playground there.

In 1736, the Trinitarians founded Marian Sodality in Vianden, a brotherhood intended to deepen the spiritual life of men and young people. In 1738, the foundation was recognized and confirmed by Pope Clement XII. Members of the organization meet regularly for devotional practices. In 1761, the City and Sodalité had the necessary means to build a small chapel above the school, located near the cemetery and the convent. The work is entrusted to master mason Johannes Hell, originally from Tyrol. A niche overlooking the entrance door houses a representation of the Immaculate Conception walking on the crescent moon and the serpent. The central figure of the altarpiece takes up the same theme.
