In 1917, an airship was caught in a storm over the English Channel and drifted to a height of 7,500 m above the ground. It thereby set the previous altitude record for a Zeppelin, quite unintentionally. The radio connection was lost and the crew suffered from a lack of oxygen and extreme cold. The next day, the L55 airship was brought to a standstill and had to make an emergency landing on the field at this location. The Zeppelin was scrapped and the Tiefenort farmers made aprons and blankets from the outer shell.
