On his way back from the Diet of Worms in 1521, Martin Luther gave a sermon here – after May 1st in Hersfeld and May 3rd in the family's ancestral home in Möhra – on May 2nd, 1521 – 2 days before his "abduction" to Wartburg Castle in Eisenach.

The Gothic Julius Church tower of St. Laurentius in Berka an der Werra was built in 1439 as a defensive tower of the town's fortifications and has an octagonal roof structure with four corner turrets. The nave was built in 1616 in the Renaissance style.

The choir tower church is dedicated to Saint Margaret. Her face smiles down from the keystone in the choir vault. The late Gothic choir is the oldest part of the church. The nave was extended in 1613 and 1676. Around 1700, the church received its richly decorated Baroque pulpit. The simple galleries date from the 19th century, as does the valuable organ by Peternell. The focus of attention is on the altarpiece from 1510. Reliefs expressively narrate the Passion of Christ. The main panel in the center depicts the Crucifixion. The left wing shows Christ on the Mount of Olives and carrying the cross. The right wing depicts the Lamentation and Resurrection. The altarpiece testifies to the pre-Reformation piety of the church. The figures engage the viewer with eye contact. The robes imitate the fashion of the time. Thus, the biblical story took on a connection with the present-day churchgoers who witnessed the Passion of Christ. Contemplating the suffering of Christ served the salvation of souls. The church was open today.

Built between 1439 and 1616 in Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. Special features: Crucifix and baptismal font from around 1500, pulpit and organ from the 17th century, bell from 1436, tombstone from 1566. And today, Thursday, it was also open.

From the bridge you have a beautiful view of the Werra – with Monte Kali in the background.

The church is closed and cannot be visited.

It is worth stopping here, either for a small meal, a cool drink or a delicious ice cream. Nice beer garden and very friendly hospitality, at reasonable prices.
