Sagone was a bishop's seat from the 6th century onwards. Pirate attacks and malaria led to the bishop's seat being moved to Vico in 1572 and later to Calvi. The place sank into insignificance for a long time. It was only the successful fight against malaria after the Second World War that led to the creation of a modern fishing and seaside resort.

The Corsican town of Sagone (Corsican: Saone) with about 800 inhabitants belongs partly to the municipality of Vico, partly to the municipality of Coggia and is located 36 kilometers north of Ajaccio on the west coast of Corsica on the Gulf of Sagone.
