From Axat, it's a long climb, 18km. It's quite beautiful down in the gorges, then a few kilometers of fairly monotonous woods. Arriving on the plateau, it clears up but it's rural. The impressive view is worth it when you reach the pass. Going down there must be a blast, the tarmac is good, it's quite wide and there's little traffic. I went down via Escouloubre: the tarmac is bad, gravel, but the forest is enchanting! Why not go the other way, then, up via Escouloubre and down via Bousquet / Roquefort etc.?

Standing on a granite spur overlooking the Castellane River, the ruins of Paracolls Castle have guarded the deep, narrow gorges carved by the river for centuries. It is one of the oldest fortresses in Conflent (its name is mentioned in 948), built, as its name suggests, to defend a pass (in this case, a defile). It was part of the network of signal towers that stretched as far as Mosset and beyond, towards the Col de Jau. It is believed that Paracolls was the birthplace of the Catalan troubadour Béranger, "educated, courteous, and valiant, but not very wealthy." photos-pour-ot-et-bm-087 Part of the chapel dedicated to Saint Peter remains: the semicircular apse and part of the nave, a cistern, and sections of the walls. Paracolls is accessible on foot from the spa park and from Campôme. There is a beautiful view of Molitg and the valley upstream towards Mosset and downstream towards Prades.

Beautiful village, worth a stop

Mosset is a village perched on a rocky spur at more than 600 m which dominates the Castellane Valley. In this superb village, everything bears the mark of time. Because Mosset was for a long time a border marker between France and Catalonia, hence its fortifications. The road offers a spectacular view when arriving from Prades. The city experienced economic and demographic development thanks to its immense forests which provided the energy necessary for processing iron ore from the Canigou peak. The population thus rose to 1,350 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century. There are now only a little more than 300 left. The ramparts, towers and curtain walls of the old castle which still remain, the Capelleta, an old restored chapel, the small streets, the “portals” and even the fountains of The spring water bears witness to this historical past. We will also note the St Julien church, with this tree perched at the top of its bell tower, which seems to stand guard over the surroundings of the village.
