The Basilica of Paray-le-Monial, a Kluniac site, is one of the finest examples of Romanesque art in Burgundy. It is considered a “scaled-down model” of Cluny Abbey. The balance of its proportions and its racy elegance are particularly evident in the gradation of the headboard. The extreme elegance of the recently restored north portal, decorated with motifs inspired by Muslim art, can be admired. Paray-le-Monial is a French town in the Saône-et-Loire department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. Paray-le-Monial has 9214 inhabitants (as of January 1st, 2019) and covers an area of approximately 25 km2. The city lies on the Bourbince River and the Canal du Center, which runs parallel to it. The Romanesque basilica of Paray-le-Monial is contemporary with Cluny Abbey since it was consecrated in 977, and allows us to imagine the splendor of its great neighbor, almost entirely destroyed during the French Revolution. Its orange-yellow limestone stones add to the richness, majesty and simplicity of the place. It is the most visited building in the Saône-et-Loire department.
