Beautiful, cute old town of this small town

The historically rich small town of Kahla lies in the scenic middle part of the Saale Valley. It is dominated by the Leuchtenburg Castle, the "Queen of the Saale Valley," and the Dohlenstein, a dominant shell limestone slope whose present shape has been shaped by several rockfalls since 1780.

This is where the Kleinpürschützer Bach flows into the Saale. It's a great place to relax, fish, or go for a swim. A small sandbar makes it easy to enter. Great views of the Saale.

Nice to drive on good surfaces

Kahla is located on the former trade route from Nuremberg to Naumburg and at the foot of the Leuchtenburg, which can be seen from afar. The city was first mentioned in documents in 876. Since then it has survived several fires, wars and floods. The almost completely preserved city wall with medieval buildings, city gates and towers bears witness to its eventful past. Kahla has been a porcelain town with tradition since 1844. Since the political change in 1989, the image of the former agricultural town has increasingly changed. Streets, medieval buildings and the city wall are being restored through construction and renovation work. Some historic buildings have information boards about the history of the buildings and their previous use. The working conditions resulted in around 650 victims of forced labor who were buried in a separate cemetery above the Bachstrasse cemetery; most of them were Italians. In Leubengrund on the road from Kahla-Löbschütz to Lindig, a central memorial for all the victims of the REIMAHG was erected in 1974, the exact number of which (varying between 2800 and 6000) can probably no longer be determined. During the Second World War, at least 156 prisoners of war from France and women and men from Ukraine had to do forced labor in local companies and institutions: in the porcelain factory, in the Otto sawmill, in the Moser iron foundry, in the city administration, at the Müller & Guhlmann company and at from the Gustav Vogelsang company. In 1944/45, one of the underground armaments projects, the REIMAHG, was realized in the Kahla area. A production area of 150,000 m² was created in Walpersberg. 15,000 forced laborers were deported from their home countries to Germany for this project. The first of them were housed in the specially established Reich Labor Service Camp Kahla Th. in Kahla. The Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter was to be built in series at REIMAHG.

The Saale is a river that is partly well developed for tourism and is fun to ride a bike or hike on. Many rest stops offer places to rest.
