The Eifelsteig trail leads across open plateaus, through quiet forests and over secluded moors – ideal for finding peace and quiet. The Rothaarsteig trail takes you over mountain ranges with sweeping views and ancient forests – perfect for those who like to spend longer on the trail. Both hiking trails have been named one of Germany’s top trails and have designated trekking sites. And then there's Essen, the big city in the Ruhr area, another perfect hiking destination: unexpectedly green, surprisingly quiet, and home to beautiful Lake Baldeney.
