The Swabian Alb is one of the most beautiful low mountain ranges in Germany and stretches between Donauwörth and Tuttlingen in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Wooded hills, enchanted castles, picturesque river valleys and settings soaked in traditions characterise this region. The varied, 370-kilometre (230 mi) route leads across the Alb and Maximilian Semsch travelled 250 kilometres (155 mi) of it. In the process, he covered 4,200 metres (13,800 ft) in altitude on his eMountain bike and enjoyed phenomenal moments and unique encounters.
If you like sporting challenges and want to cycle through a beautiful landscape, you’ll be thrilled by the Alb-Crossing. With electric assistance, you’ll master the steeper climbs with flying colours, just like Maximilian Semsch did (what-a-trip.de), and you can concentrate fully on the beautiful views. For the Alb-Crossing, it’s best to use wide, off-road tyres. Weatherproof clothing and a spare battery can also be helpful, although there are numerous charging stations called ‘Spätzle-Power’ at inns, cafés and hotels in the region.
The journey to the starting point is easy by train – first to Stuttgart, then on to Kirchheim unter Teck by S-Bahn. From there, it’s only 7 kilometres (4 mi) to Owen, where you can spend the first night of your journey. The route is marked with yellow ‘X-ing’ signs and leads you along forest trails, field tracks and cycle paths as well as quiet side roads. With overnight stays in Lichtenstein and Albstadt-Onstmettingen, Maximilian covered the distance in three stages. Depending on your wishes and fitness, you can adjust the split or ride the complete 370-kilometre route. Charge the battery, pack the saddlebags and off you go to the Swabian Alb!
