The push onto Conwy saw me head along the Snowdonia slate trail. As it swooped and turned I hit pockets of cold air that I wanted to hang out it all day to avoid the midday heat. The final lump of elevation in the route was a slow burning climb up small b roads which turned into a grassy track and onto the final descent of rocky singletrack. But not before pushing my bike through a couple of boggy bits. Before long I was at the station waiting for a train back to where I started, filthy from 6 days riding.

On towards Betws Y Coed and the route was starting to feel more mountainous and familiar from all those times spent in Eryri growing up. Having a quick lunch break in the shade I was joined by two women doing the same route but staying in BnBs. I thought it must be nice to drop some weight off the bike and not carry camping gear, but it’s been so warm, perfect tent weather. I left them after talks of pizza in Betws Y Coed and had all the forest tracks surrounding Penmachno trails to myself. I finally descended my way into town ready for a break when I noticed my makeshift front bag supports had snapped both the p-clips on either side that held it together, knew I should have packed a couple of spares, and testament to how rough it had been in places. Luck would have it that the first road I popped out onto had a car garage within it a friendly mechanic gave me a couple of new ones for free. After a leisurely stop with pizza, sorbet and a cold drink I fixed the rack and it was onto the final few miles before finding a campsite near Capel Curig. I made camp, on what might have been the only flat piece of ground on the whole site, with views of Yr Wyddfa one side and a lake the other.

I set off with a good few miles on quiet b roads which was a welcome relief after how tough the Trans Cambrian Way had been. The weather had warmed up a fair bit too, as I tackled the first big climb of the day sweat dripping from every part of me. I sat at the top drying my shirt and socks out when a couple crested the hill going the other way pushing bikes. One of the e-bikes pedals has seized and unscrewed itself from the crank. After lending them my Leatherman it was back spinning freely again and off they went. My T-shirt kinda dry I set off down the hill, with a view of the sea to the left as I descended into the valley. I had planned to wild camp not far outside of Coed Y Brenin and have breakfast in the cafe there, I ended up pushing on and found a quiet little camp spot by the lake at Trawsfynydd. Not before dealing with maybe the roughest section of trail on the whole route, hiking my bike up the loose rocky track out of the trail centre. Soon enough I was back on tarmac and I made it into camp not long before sunset.

The final day was the highlight of the route for me. The meandering singletrack to begin with then open moorland with steep loose slate shutes. A quick pad change after some sketchy moments saw me slowing down appropriately again. Along some of Machynlleth trail networks and into town for a night at Toad Hall.

Having ridden some parts of the Elan valley before I was looking forward to seeing what was beyond. Again a steady headwind made the going extremely slow at times. Having to take a detour a few miles off route in search of food supplies, I hadn’t taken into account how remote this stretch of the route is. A big old climb back out the valley and headed towards a bothy I’ve had on my radar for a while. Letting Komoot plot the route there may have been a mistake. As I meandered up through a wind farm the trail took me along right beside one of the massive turbines as its blades cut through the air right above me. The path practically disappeared into a measly line through some bushes, which took me down what I would describe as a small stream. Fallen trees blocked the path every now and again just to add to the slow progression. Eventually I found the bothy all peaceful and quiet but the draw of a warm shower took over as I noticed a campsite only a few miles further along the route. One of the pleasures of touring in July is the daylight hours are so long.

Wales has long been on my list of places I wanted to explore by bike more. With a 2 week window it seemed like a perfect time to tackle both these routes as one conveniently ends nearby the other starts and see a good chunk of the country while I’m at it. It was well after midday on the 1st day after a quick train from Shrewsbury to Knighton. The Trans Cambrian Way really sets you up right away for what you have in store. Steep grassy climbs and chunky descents. Sweeping up and over every nearby hill with a constant head wind I eventually made it to Rhayader where I made peace with not getting as far as planned.
