A beautiful walk with many panoramic views, through the scenic landscapes of the Herve region near Aubel. Just as we arrived at Val Dieu Abbey, it started to rain. Not a big deal, since we had planned a stop at the brasserie. However, this meant we didn't have any photos of the abbey.

Vous trouverez le programme de la randonnée sur le site web www.originelewandelingen.be The hamlet of Regniessart, a well-kept secret, consists of about twenty houses in a clearing in the vast Forêt de Nismes. Woodcutters and farmers once lived there. The houses and the chapel were built with "devil's stone," a stone from the nearby quarry that is so hard it can't be worked. The only road through the hamlet is difficult to navigate and reserved for local traffic. During the walk, you'll encounter virtually no landmarks. Aside from the Croix Mattys, the tiny houses of the Baraque de Tilleul, and the Baraque du Coq, there are no landmarks.

Our schedule coincided with another hike, and it immediately turned into an adventure.
Except for the starting point—which we reached by car via a gravel road—we didn't encounter a single village or hamlet.
After 14 kilometers, my phone died, and... I didn't have a power bank 🤔. Marina had hers, but we

From Wylam to South Shields is not that far - but we can't afford us to miss the ferry. We pass the Tyne bridges and than we take the tunnel under the Tyne to South Shields, the finish of Hadrian's Wall Cycleway. After the finish at Arbeia Roman Fort we take the ferry (instead of the tunnel) to North Shields where our DFDS ferry waits to rejoin the continent. A little detail: for the second day on our trip it doesn't rain :-).

Believe it or not, it stayed dry for the second day in a row. We leave Wylam and are immediately back on a train along the Tyne. We haven't had breakfast yet, so we're looking forward to a delicious breakfast. Branzino isn't open yet in Newburn, but in Lemington we have breakfast at the fitness center

Our seventh ride was a dry ride. And while ride 6 was the most beautiful around the remnants of Hadrian's Wall, this became the most beautiful ride in terms of landscape. For this, we do take an alternative route suggested by Cicerone guides. And thus we see the rugged rock formations of the Whin Sill. Cliffs without water. Hadrian's Wall also ran over this wonderfully beautiful natural obstacle. We also pass Hexham, with its many medieval architecture. We end in Wylam, half a day away from Newcastle.

Definitely the most beautiful section of the Hadrian's Cycleway. Every cycling trip is an adventure, no matter how meticulously you prepare. Our adventure focused on this ride, just before we set off on the first remnants of Hadrian's Wall.

Day 6: Port Carlisle - Greenhead (Hadrian's Cycleway) 69.3 km; 710 m (239 ft) elevation gain
We leave our disappointing overnight accommodation. We continue along the high-water mark along the River Eden to the memorial of King Edward I. For the second time, we cross Carlisle. We look for a coffee somewhere

Day 5: Workington - Port Carlisle; 75 km - 250 hm Now that we've finished the Reivers Route, we embark on the Hadrian's Wall Cycle Route back to Newcastle. We soon spot a cormorant and a heron. We continue along the coast today, but while it will be our driest day, it will also be the least interesting. We pass Maryport, where there's also an alternative end to the Reivers Route. We pass a golf course, where we have to watch out for flying golf balls. A little further on, we stop at a farm for a refreshing milkshake, and back on the coast, we stop for coffee and scones. In Silloth, I pop into a museum of toy soldiers. In Abbeytown, we visit the abbey. In Newton Arlosh, we come across a fortified church and more impressive gravestones. We're approaching the coast again and are 1,150 miles from Rome. In Bowness-on-Solway, we pass the Path Pavillon, the symbolic start/end point for pilgrims on Hadrian's Footpath. We drive through some more floodplains and look for something to eat in Port Carlisle. A woman guides us into her cozy restaurant, where—how could it be otherwise—we run into some Dutch people. With a full stomach, we reach our accommodation two kilometers further on.

Day 4 of our Reivers Route takes us from Carlisle to the finish line on Workington beach. There was quite a bit of climbing, but once again it was a joy to ride through this beautiful landscape. It was a day that was exhausting, but what a beautiful finish on Workington beach! This is truly a joy to behold.

With a slight delay due to Komoot's new face and the first day of their refurbishment, the highlights weren't yet available. The second day was a bit of a search.
We left in the morning after visiting some more sights in Carlisle. We entered a church where the pulpit was so large that the congregation

On the third stage, we quickly leave Scotland behind, but the scenery remains beautiful. We pass Bewcastle Castle Ruins with its Anglo-Saxon Cross. Afterward, we deviate briefly from the route to visit Kirklington Hall and its gardens. It's a lovely tearoom. We finish in Carlisle, the capital of Cumbria.

Before we left, the rear tire needed replacing. That went quickly with two people, and just in front of the hotel, there was a bike repair stand with a pump. It was done in record time. We quickly rejoined the Reivers Route. But quickly drove out of Scotland again, which was a shame, as Scotland provided

The second leg of our Reivers Route takes us through a heavy downpour to Kielder Dam. Unpaved, green paths lead us along the shores of Kielder Water to Kielder Castle. There, we unfortunately have to leave the Reivers Route for our hotel in Newcastleton. Meanwhile, we cross the Scottish border.

After a refreshing night's sleep, we head back towards the city center and continue our Reiversroute.
After 10 km, we're hit by another serious downpour. Marina stops under a tree. Eventually, I convince her to keep going, hoping to escape the "local" shower.
After 20 km, we arrive at a large lake – Kielder

The original walks are definitely my favorite in Belgium. This walk is an adventurous one, and fun is always guaranteed. In Han-sur-Lesse, you only hear Dutch. At the church, we see some birds of prey awaiting their annual consecration. We then walk above the (old) Lesse valley with beautiful panoramas
