Vannes today retains three quarters of its fortified enclosure. To the north, portions of the Gallo-Roman wall have withstood the ravages of time. The gates fortified at the time of the Montforts, such as the Porte Prison or that of Calmont, are protected by towers and pendulum drawbridges. But the most beautiful gate is undoubtedly the Saint-Vincent gate, erected in 1624 and restored in 1747. Here, the decoration of shell niches, columns with capitals, has replaced the loopholes, machicolations and other defensive artifices.
