About two kilometers southeast of Uftrungen is located on a wooded hilltop slightly away from the hiking trails, the castle ruins Arnswald. It was first mentioned in 1217 in a document of the monastery Walkenried. The castle Arnswald was at that time the ancestral seat of the aristocratic family of Arnswald, a sideline of the Hohnsteiner counts.

The fortress consisted of an oval, about 18 by 30 meters large core castle and an irregularly shaped, about 40 by 70 meters large outer bailey. Kernburg and Vorburg were surrounded by a wall-ditch plant. The material used for the walls was sandstone, which was combined with gypsum mortar.

The castle Arnswald was abandoned as a dwelling already in the late Middle Ages. At the end of the 15th century, it was in a state of decline. In our days, you can still see the remains of the surrounding Wall Trench system. The stump of the mighty keep, which stands at the highest point of the hilltop, has also survived the times. This tower remains 9,60 meters in diameter and its foundations are approximately 2,50 meters thick.

The stump of the tower has been undermined in previous centuries by estimated tombs. Whether the search was worthwhile and whether at that time corresponding news with clues about hidden valuables in circulation, is not known. In any case, the stones of the castle seem to have been sought after as building material in the surrounding villages. Presumably some of these are still to be found today in many a house. Apart from the fragment of the keep, there are no indications for further buildings on the grounds of the castle ruin Arnswald for the layman.

If you love rustic forests, this is the place for you. Unfortunately, you can't see the castle anymore, but it is still nice to hike in the nature reserve!
