The lighthouse was built in 1896. After the German-Danish War, the area still belonged to the German Empire.
From 1906 onward, the lighthouse keeper of Holnis was given the additional task of monitoring the neighboring lights of Laagmai and Rinkenis. Following the Schleswig referendum in 1920, the lighthouse was transferred to Danish administration.
The original lighthouse, which consisted of a lens system with a spirit burner, was replaced with an acetone gas lamp in 1921.
The Gendarmstien hiking trail now runs alongside the lighthouse.
