At over 57 meters high, the town hall or city tower is the tallest tower in Crailsheim. Due to its monumentality, which can be seen from afar, it became the architectural landmark of the city. In its current form, the tower goes back to a construction by the margravial colonel master builder Karl Friedrich von Zocha from the years 1717/18. The earlier assumption that the tower was built to mark the 200th anniversary of the Reformation (Luther posting his theses in 1517) cannot be substantiated by sources.
Until 1912, the so-called high watch was kept from the city tower to protect against the threat of fire and approaching enemies. The last watchman family left their apartment in 1932.
The tower was destroyed in an air raid on February 23, 1945, and a 13-year-old boy serving as an air observer lost his life. After the war, the town hall tower was initially rebuilt in a provisional form - still without a spire. It was not until 1979, initiated by a private foundation, that its historic appearance was restored when the top of the tower was put on.
The "church" next to the town hall is the Liebfrauenkapelle.
