During the reign of Augustus the Strong and his successor, the Electoral Saxon postal miles columns were set up on all important postal and trade routes and in almost all cities in the Electorate of Saxony to indicate the official distances. This should provide the basis for a uniform calculation of postal rates. Since the Electorate of Saxony was then much larger than today's federal state of Saxony, such columns can also be found in Thuringia, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Poland.
