It has been proven that three predecessor wooden buildings stood on the artificially created Kirchwarft. These go back to the 12th century. During this time, the eastern half of today's Kirchwarft was piled up as about 2.5 meters high hill of sand. This formed the building platform for the first church, which was later destroyed by a fire. The successor building was also built of wood. He had a width of about 4 meters and was also a robbery of the flames. In the later 12th century, the church was raised and built with a new wooden church.
In the second half of the 13th century, the Kirchwarft was considerably enlarged, especially in the west. After this work was completed, a foundation of granite blocks was created on the hill and built on the first stone church. This was about 23 meters long, about 7 meters wide and had a height of 20 meters. The walls had a thickness of just over 3 meters. This building was built in the style of Romanesque. On the eastern gable it had a semicircular choir-like conclusion. In each gable there were arched windows as well as on the two long sides one round arched door and three small lancet windows. Over the centuries, the building decayed more and more, so that it had to be demolished in the 19th century. Only the outlying bell tower from the 15th century has been preserved.
In 1862, the present-day church of St. Mary Magdalene was built as a single-nave hall church with retracted semicircular apse. This received like its predecessor church a semicircular shape and a round vault.

Maria Magdalena Church
The ev.-luth. Parish Fulkum, 6 km south of Esens, is a small but independent parish with around 200 parishioners, which is connected to Esens through the parish. The Maria Magdalena Church, consecrated in 1862, is located in the middle of the village. Like its numerous predecessors, it was built on a terp to protect against flooding. The bell tower from the 13th century is steeply inclined a few meters from the church due to the poor building site.
