      A picturesque path between Esens and Bensersiel directly along the Benser Tief.

      A “deep” (Dutch Diep, Low German Deep) is a river that serves to drain the mainland of the East Frisian peninsula, which is completely enclosed by the dike, as there are no natural water drains that would puncture the dike.

      The main flow towards the sea is caused solely by the fact that the surface water from the catchment area of the low can only flow towards the sea. The water levels and their gradients at different points of a low depend on the amount of precipitation in the catchment area and on the water level of the sea and its changes. Without hydraulic structures to regulate it, the water level and current are subject to the influence of the tides. Nowadays, the outflow of many lowlands is guaranteed by estuarine pumping stations.
