Around 1750 the important Rococo architect Dominikus Zimmermann built the Wieskirche as a pilgrimage church. It is considered the perfection of the Rococo style because of its interior "of Mozartean perfection", while its exterior looks like a "wonderful camel's hump", wrote the knowledgeable hiker Josef Hofmiller in 1928. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is therefore heavily visited by tourists ( unesco.de/kultur-und-natur/welterbe/welterbe-deutschland/wallfahrtskirche-die-wies).

After secularization in 1802/03 it was to be demolished. A clever hunter is said to have saved her: He accidentally guided the king who was hunting in the area to the Wies, who was then “enchanted by the magnificence” and the Wies was saved. So goes the legend that the landlady at Wies told Herr Hofmiller. That sounds very Bavarian and wondrous, but at least this jewel of interior design has been preserved. There are more than enough car parking spaces, but you can only really feel and experience what is special about the Wies if you approach it on foot (and try to ignore mass tourism).

The Wieskirche is a magnificently furnished pilgrimage church built in the Rococo style and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. It is also known for the statue of the Scourged Saviour. A peasant woman noticed water droplets in her eyes on the statue, which she mistook for tears.
