The abbey of Saint-Amand, which dates from the 12th century, is a true architectural masterpiece of the Romanesque style. Its imposing vaults, detailed carvings and tall bell tower elicit a sense of wonder.

The Romanesque parish church of Saint-Amand is still almost completely enclosed by the defensive wall of the formerly important Abbey of Saint-Amand-de-Coly and is known for its fortified architecture.

About the exact date of the founding of the Abbey Church and its early days is not known. Their building data can only be reconstructed approximately. In the left side wall of the northern transept chapel a brick in color of the surrounding masonry has been given a Latin grave inscription. The text mentions Abbot William, who is buried here and is considered the builder of the church. His death is dated to the sources between 1125 and 1150. It is believed that at the time of his funeral at least the choir and the entire transept had to be completed. This in turn leads to the assumption that the construction work of the abbey church was begun at the beginning of the 12th century and that the entire building was completed at the beginning of the 13th century.
