According to the official website of the city of Bad Wimpfen, the former "Königspfalz" is an "Kaiserpfalz" (see here: badwimpfen.de/gaeste-bereich/bad-wimpfen-entdeck/altstadt-sehenswuerdheiten/kaiserpfalz). However, the arcades are located at the point of the "highlight" marked here, these are the remains of the "King's Hall" in the originally two-storey hall (not the palace). The traveling kings of the Middle Ages held court here, making it the most important building in the Palatinate. The arcades on the north side still bear witness to the once magnificent design of the palace as an excellent example of the imperial construction of the Hohenstaufen dynasty. The differently designed round arches, cube capitals and columns are considered special features from earlier times. Direct access to the royal gallery of the Palatine Chapel leads through the arcades. The arcades were built around 1200 AD.

The former royal palace in Wimpfen is 215 meters long, up to 88 meters wide and originally three mountain peace the largest Hohenstaufen Palatinate in Germany. It lies on a mountain spur above the Neckar at a strategic point. In the north, east and south, the Palatinate is still covered by an almost closed wall. Construction began under Frederick I Barbarossa (1152-1190) shortly after the middle of the 12th century. 1190 or no later than 1197 was a freeze. Under Frederick II (1212-1250) sat after 1217 a second construction phase, which was possibly continued under Henry (VII). Presumably in 1320/22 the Palatinate was largely destroyed and hardly used by royalty after the first third of the 14th century. Over time, it merged with the western adjoining city, in which the former Palatinate today forms the so-called castle district.
