Until 1959, lead, zinc, silver and copper ore, among other things, was mined in the Adolph-Helene mine in Altlay by the Barbarasegen union. It is estimated that a total of 384,000 tons of raw ore were mined. There was also a small railway from the mine to Zell for shipping the mined ores.

In 1957, the Adolph-Helene mine was leased to Stolberger Zink, which ceased operations two years later. A sharp drop in the price of ores made it unprofitable. Although the prices later rose again, the recommissioning of the disused mine was not worthwhile.

Today only the remains of the former industrial facilities are visible. The headframe was dismantled in the 1960s, the remaining buildings are left to decay.

To the left (east) of the buildings you can still see the remains of the funicular railway leading up the mountain, with which the ores were transported in lorries to the top building, where they are stored in a concrete silo and processed in the systems below.
