The Ruhr Fighter Memorial is a memorial erected in 1934 during the National Socialist period in the Horst district of Essen. It is located in a wooded area directly above the north bank of the Ruhr about 100 meters south-east of Haus Horst. In 1985 it was rededicated as a memorial.
The inauguration took place on November 4, 1934 with a National Socialist mass march with swastika flags and other stagings.
The memorial was erected to commemorate fallen members of the Freikorps, residents' militia, Reichswehr and police units who fought against revolutionary workers in the Ruhr area from 1918 to 1920 and in particular to combat the general strike in March 1920 and the subsequent suppression of the so-called Ruhr uprising of the miners had been involved.

The vantage point over the Ruhr Valley below the street "Vryburg" and "Haus Horst", which is covered with beautiful quarry stones, is actually an idyllic place, which allows the view to wander both to the classic industrial backdrop of the Dahlhausen Railway Museum and to long stretches of meadows and hiking trails. However, the round column in the middle of the square, also clad with rubble stones, has something pathetic-religious, especially with its partial decay, and could be reminiscent of a mini Stonehenge or a Germanic Thingplatz.
In fact, this possible impression is not a coincidence or a glitch, but quite intentional.
The "memorial" from 1934 was intended exclusively to commemorate the "fallen Ruhr fighters" of the Freikorps. Allegedly, these mercenaries had saved our region from the "red flood" of a "Red Ruhr Army", in fact they had fought to turn the Weimar Republic into a military dictatorship as early as 1920.
