Tobacco Fountain + Old School (1868) - Heddesheim 🚴‍♂️

Heddesheim is known as a tobacco community. The oldest evidence of tobacco cultivation dates back to the 18th century. After World War I until 1939, Heddesheim was the largest tobacco community in Germany, with its peak year being 1935, when approximately 900 tons of tobacco were produced by approximately 250 farmers. Tobacco is still grown here today, but production is now only 1-2 tons. Numerous tobacco barns, where tobacco leaves were and are hung to dry, can still be seen in Heddesheim. These barns dominate the townscape.

The monument in honor of Karl Sauters, in the form of a tobacco fountain, stands in front of the old school.

In 1868, the "Old School" was built on Beindstrasse. The building on Schulstrasse was added. By 1958, Heddesheim's population had nearly doubled to 5,280, and another school building was constructed. With the construction of the second school site on Rheinstrasse, the old site was renamed Hans Thoma Elementary School. 🚴‍♂️
