The St. Laurentius Church is one of the typical north German brick buildings. It forms the central point in Kalkhorst, because here every street in the village leads directly to the church.

A striking feature of this church is its irregular floor plan. The church tower and the nave are asymmetrically connected to one another. The side aisles of this hall church also connect asymmetrically to the church building.

In Kalkhorst in Klützer Winkel almost all roads lead to the church. The church, consecrated to St. Lawrence, was built in the 13th and 14th centuries. The three-aisled brick-Gothic hall church is particularly noticeable because of its striking irregularities in the floor plan. The tower and ship are asymmetrically connected to one another. The two low aisles also join asymmetrically.

The choir with buttresses forming four corners of an octagon is dated to around 1350. It probably replaces a previous building. The nave dates from the 13th century and is the older part of the structure. The construction of the tower takes place between the ship and the choir. He received the pointed spire in 1686.

The baroque interior dates from the 18th century. These include the high altar, the galleries, the organ front and the pulpit. An organ is said to have existed as early as 1653, which was donated by a Lübeck merchant family. A new organ was built in 1869 by Friedrich Wilhelm Winzer. The late Gothic frescoes in the painting of the church are also worth seeing.
