The first building dates back to the 13th and early 14th centuries. The church was repeatedly rebuilt over the centuries. The inside is significantly larger than you would expect from the outside and is bursting with treasures (so keep it clean).

The origin of the Church of San Pietro e Paolo al Caveoso presents several uncertainties.
The construction is believed to date back to 1218; then, over the years, the Church has undergone modifications and changes that have determined its present form.

The facade has been renovated several times; it is very simple and has elements reminiscent of the baroque; There are three portals on which as many niches are placed that house statues: on the main portal the Madonna, on the left St. Peter and on the right St. Paul. In the seventeenth century the square bell tower was built, which has a balustrade decorated with geometric elements.

In 1752 the church was reopened for worship by Archbishop Lanfranchi, on this occasion other changes were made: a spire similar to that of the cathedral was added to the bell tower, while a wooden false ceiling was added to the bell tower, decorated with remarkable paintings.by local artists .

The interior consists of three naves with a transept. In the central nave is the main altar in carved and gilded wood, built by local workers in the 18th century; above it is a sixteenth-century polyptych.
The left nave is decorated with four chapels, while the right one has only the shields: this side was greatly modified when the church was detached from the Monterrone cliff to allow the construction of an oratory and a driveway to the Mallow and Casalnuovo districts . Inside there are many artistic elements of exquisite workmanship.

The church in Matera was dedicated to the two saints Peter and Paul (Santi PIETRO e PAOLO), also known as the "prince of the apostles". Their common feast day in the calendar of saints is June 29th.
                                  * Simon, nicknamed Peter (Rock), was a fisherman on Lake Genesareth when he was called by Jesus Christ to be a "fisher of men" together with his brother Andrew. According to Catholic understanding, he is the highest apostle, and the two thousand year long line of popes - currently Fraunziscus - are his successors. In statues and paintings, Peter is almost always depicted with two keys in his hand; this attribute refers to the Bible verse in Matthew: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Chapter 16, Verse 19).
                                  * Paul was initially an opponent of the Christian movement and was not called to the apostleship of Jesus Christ during his lifetime like the other apostles, but was only converted later with the famous "Damascus experience". His attribute is the sword with which he was executed. According to the Roman law of the time, such a sentence was a "privilege" (quick death and not, like other types of execution, associated with a long, painful death struggle) that was available to the citizens of Rome.
