      The city was first documented in 791, the city was raised in 1282 to the Free Imperial City. Despite a strong destruction by air raids during World War II, the city contains much to see. The city hall is the landmark of the city, a "splendid achievement of southern German Renaissance architecture" (Baedecker). Opposite the birthplace of Friedrich Rückert; in the market square the Friedrich-Rückert-monument. The Museum Georg Schäfer (Brückenstr. 20) is definitely worth a visit, featuring in a brilliant architecture the most important private collection of 19th century art with the world's largest collection of paintings by the painter Carl Spitzweg (open Tue-Sun 10-17h, Thu bis 21:00). Further library Otto Schäfer (Judithstr. 16) with the almost complete printing-graphic work of Albrecht Dürer (open Tue-Sat 14-17h, Sun 10-17h).

        Almost as (or instead?) "Ratskeller" there is an Italian restaurant. The atmosphere is very beautiful both in the vaulted cellar and outside in front of the town hall. We also enjoyed the pizza.
