The creation of this remote place of worship is shrouded in legend. But let's limit ourselves to historical basics. As the late historical researcher, Pastor Schott from Habichsthal, has established, a wooden chapel was built in 1349 on the site of today's Kreuzkapelle, probably by the first glassmakers of the Spessart. About a hundred years later, a stone chapel is said to have been built in its place. Even if the year of construction is not exactly known - probably before 1450 - the Kreuzkapelle is in any case one of the oldest places of worship in the whole of Spessart.

Even today, the Christians from Frammersbach and Habichsthal regularly "roll over" the feast of the discovery of the cross on May 3rd and the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross (September 14th) in solemn processions up the mountain to the Chapel of the Cross. The Kreuzkapelle is chosen by many young bridal couples as the place of their marriage because of the special relationship the local Christians have to the church and the very special sacred atmosphere. The main substance of the chapel was renovated in 2001/2002 and now shines in new splendor despite its simplicity.

This church, which is dedicated to the Holy Cross (Latin "Santa Croce"), relates its patron saint to the cross on which Jesus Christ died. The veneration of the Holy Cross goes back in large part to Saint Helena, who was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great (who, after his victory at the "Milvian Bridge" outside Rome, recognized Christianity as a religion and in 312 the long time of persecution ended with the Milan “Tolerance Edict”). In the early fourth century she undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Israel / Palestine) and brought numerous relics from there to Europe, including the "True Cross" on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Helena is therefore often depicted with a cross as an attribute.
The feast of the discovery, public presentation and veneration of the Holy Cross - called "Exaltation of the Cross" - is celebrated by the Church on September 14th.
