The fortress was built in 1595 to defend itself against the Spanish under Turkish occupation. It is considered to be one of the finest examples of Ottoman military architecture. The imposing tower was later added as a watchtower by the Fatimids. The fort offers beautiful views of both the sea, the port and the medina. Later it was used as a prison, today the fortress houses a museum and a café.

The explanations are even in German. There was no café in December 2022. But we were the only visitors at that time.
