The Gastown neighborhood was Vancouver's first downtown core and is named for "Gassy" Jack Deighton, a Geordie sailor, steamboat captain and bartender who arrived in 1867 to open the area's first saloon. A largely forgotten borough after the Great Depression, Gastown fell into disrepair into the 1960s. A citizen campaign led the provincial government to designate Gastown as a historic site in 1971. The neighborhood has also been a National Historic Site since 2009.
The neighborhood's most famous landmark is the 'Gastown Steam Clock', a steam-powered clock on the corner of Cambie Street and Water Street. A detailed description of the watch can be found on the website:
