The Cona Island is the main point of interest of the Mouth of the Isonzo Nature Reserve, a reserve of very high environmental value that extends over 2,406 hectares. On the Cona Island, between the main course of the river and the secondary branch of the Quarantia, numerous environmental restoration interventions have been carried out and the main infrastructures dedicated to use are concentrated: the Visitor Center, the guesthouse, the photography huts and the riding school for horses. From here there are two main paths, along which observation points are located: the ring path, shorter (40 minutes), allows you to reach the Marinetta Observatory and via a circular path around the restorations (temporary wetlands) report to the Visitor Center; the path of the United World, longer and more satisfying, leads instead to the Hawthorn meadows, the Mezza Cona and the Foce dell’Isonzo, at Punta Spigolo (travel time about 3 hours there and back). The reserve is frequented by avifauna that has hundreds of species; moreover, there is no lack of specimens of gray goose and Camargue horses in the wild, chosen for their predisposition to life in the marshes and suitable for carrying out a control of the vegetation.
