In the 11th and 12th centuries, Barfleur was an important seaport, especially for trade between France and England. William the Conqueror is said to have set sail for England from here in 1066.

After a long wait, "William the Conqueror" set sail from here (i.e. into the English Channel) to use force to underline his unlawful legal claim to the English throne. Since he won the subsequent battle at Hastings in 1066, his unlawful legal claim then became legal.
