    The Rennsteig runs on the ridge line of the Thuringian Mittelgebirge from northwest to southeast usually at altitudes of about 500 to 970 meters. It begins in Eisenacher district Hörschel on the Werra (196 m above sea level NHN) and ends after 168.3 km (historical length) in Blankenstein on the Saale (414 m above sea level NHN).
    In 2003, the Rennsteig was re-measured by the Thuringian State Office for Surveying and Geoinformation; a total length of 169.29 km was determined. The Rennsteig crosses the former German-German border six times. The marking is very good throughout, usually a white R called Mareile. Since 2008, six local alternative routes have been signposted at the request of hiking associations, avoiding the main roads or linking attractive viewpoints. These variants are about 22 kilometers long and have been marked with a blue R Along the Rennsteig there are numerous resting places and about every 5 to 10 kilometers small open shelters. For medical care, bases of the Thüringer Bergwacht were established.

                        The Große Dreiherrenstein is a crossroads of several old trade routes on the Rennsteig in about 808 meters altitude. It is the center of the Rennsteig and is also located on a watershed.                                       The center of the Rennsteig is a popular destination for hikers in the UNESCO Thuringian Forest Biosphere Reserve. The Rennsteig itself is a hiking trail that stretches along the ridgeline of the Thuringian low mountain range and runs from Hörschel an der Werra to Blankenstein an der Saale. The official length of the Rennsteig is around 169 kilometers.

                                      The midpoint of the Rennsteig offers hikers the feeling of "mountain festival" as at this point they have covered half of the trail, no matter which direction they hike the Rennsteig. There is a restaurant near this point that offers hikers the opportunity to rest and refresh themselves.

                                      Interestingly, there are also alternative routes on the Rennsteig that are marked with a blue "R" and either avoid busy streets or lead to attractive viewpoints. These variants are around 22 kilometers long in total.

                                      In the area around the center of the Rennsteig there is also the Großer Dreiherrenstein, a historic crossing point of old trade routes, which also lies on a watershed. The nearby mountain Großer Dreiherrnstein is the highest peak in the area.
