The former monastery in Seligenthal was founded in the 13th century. The monastery church has been preserved from the Middle Ages and is considered the oldest Franciscan church in Germany. Most of the other buildings were rebuilt after a fire in the 17th century.
The Seligenthal Monastery is considered to be the oldest Franciscan church north of the Alps. The monastery was founded almost 800 years ago (1231), initially as a hermitage, and only dissolved in the 19th century. The church is now used as a parish church, and a 4-star event hotel is located in the former cloister courtyard.
On the Mönchweg, the monastery and the sights in the area add variety and make the hike very entertaining.
