Because of its Marienkapelle, the hamlet of Affalterbach has been a place of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages, especially for Nuremberg citizens. Its location in the border area made it a constant bone of contention between the imperial city of Nuremberg and the Margraves of Ansbach. The escalated disputes culminated in the destruction of the hamlet and the burning down of the church in 1552. Only a sign posted by the Schwarzenbruck municipality in 1999 reminds us of this place.
