Hirsau Monastery is located in the Nagold Valley between densely wooded Black Forest hills. In the Middle Ages, the Benedictine abbey was of paramount importance, ecclesiastical and political. The mighty ruins of two large monasteries, St. Aurelius and St. Peter and Paul, bear witness to this.

n the former Benedictine monastery of St. Peter and Paul you will encounter an important piece of medieval history.
In the 11th and 12th centuries, Hirsau was a very important German reform monastery of the Cluniac type. The three-nave basilica of St. Peter and Paul was one of the largest Romanesque churches in southwest Germany and a model for many other monastery churches before it was destroyed by French troops in 1692 during the Palatinate War of Succession.
