      The lake area is divided into the Great Ratzeburg Lake, the Domsee and the Great and Small Küchensee by embankments. The Küchensee and the Great Ratzeburg Lake surround the island town of Ratzeburg, which can be reached via the Lüneburger Damm, the Kleinbahndamm and the Königsdamm. During the summer, the Ratzeburg Lake is an ideal center for all water sports enthusiasts. A 9-kilometer-long sailing area stretches from the Rothenhusen ferry house to the south to the island town of Ratzeburg. The village of Pogeez, which is located on the west bank, invites you to take a refreshing swim in the clear water in a supervised bathing area built by the DLRG, which is surrounded by a beautiful landscape. A child-friendly bathing area, stone-free bathing ground, a 60-meter-long bathing jetty, a bathing island, sanitary facilities and changing rooms are available, as well as a small playground with a bathing area and a kiosk. The free parking spaces are located at the entrance to the bathing area.

                  The federal highway 208 runs through the town of Ratzeburg and also through the lake in a west-east direction from Bad Oldesloe to Gadebusch and Wismar as Lüneburger Damm and Königsdamm. Not far from the western shore, the B 207 (Alte Salzstraße) runs parallel to the lake from Lübeck to Lüneburg, which is crossed by the federal highway 20 about a kilometer north of Rothenhusen, an old Lübeck customs station at the outlet of the Wakenitz from the lake. Excursion boats coming from Lübeck and Ratzeburg dock in Rothenhusen. In addition to the new motorway bridge, the Wakenitz Bridge near Rothenhusen, which was renovated in 2009, is the only road connection from Schleswig-Holstein to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern between Lübeck and Ratzeburg.
