The St. Theresia Church on Nordstrand was built in 1662.

20 years after the devastating Burchardi flood of 1634, Dutch, Catholic dike builders came to Nordstrand to re-dam the island.

The area was Evangelical Lutheran, but the dike builders were granted religious freedom for their faith and built the St. Theresia Church.

As the church became increasingly dilapidated in the 19th century, the islanders built a new building on its foundations, which was completed in 1887.

The St. Theresia Church contains a cathedral treasure and cathedral relics.

The cross outside above the vestibule to the church has been there since 1662.

In the church, the apse with the starry sky always captivates people. Gravestones with interesting inscriptions, the oldest from 1663, commemorate parishioners from that time.
Many small details such as a pelican or a mysterious chest

await the visitor who enters the island cathedral with open eyes.

In 1887, St. Theresia was given its current appearance during a complete restoration. At this point in time the church received only one bell. Before that, the Catholics were allowed to use the bell of the Protestant St. Vincent Church in Odenbüll. The widely scattered old Catholic community now has around 500 members (Wikipedia).

The St. Theresia Church on Nordstrand, also known as the island cathedral, is an old Catholic church that was built in 1662. It is located on the Osterdeich between the Alterkoog and Osterkoog polders in the Süden district. It originally served the Catholic dyke builders from the Netherlands who came to the island after the devastating Burchardi flood of 1634 to help rebuild the dykes. The church was dedicated to Saint Theresia of Avila and Mary Margaret of the Angels.

Architecturally, the church is a brick hall building in the Dutch Renaissance style with a richly structured gable front and a striking roof turret with an octagonal lantern. The lettering “D O M” above the portal stands for “Deo Optimo Maximo” (God, the best and greatest), which earned the church the nickname “Theresia Cathedral”.

The interior of the church is dominated by simple Renaissance furnishings. Of particular note is a 17th-century altarpiece of the Crucifixion of Christ, which was taken from the original church. In 1887, the church was extensively restored and acquired its current form, including a bell that was not there before.
