It's really fun to cycle along the dike between the sheep. If you are on the road with an e-bike and have run out of battery in a strong headwind, you can "recharge" at a public charging station ~ 3 km to the east (Hüttenweg, just behind the dyke) during a break.

The Halligen are a unique group of small islands not protected by dikes in the North Frisian Wadden Sea on the coast of Schleswig-Holstein. They consist of ten inhabited and uninhabited Halligen: Langeneß, Hooge, Gröde, Nordstrandischmoor, Oland, Süderoog, Südfall, Hamburger Hallig, Norderoog and Habel.

The history of the Halligen goes back to the Viking Age, when Frisians settled here. Even then, the settlements were built on artificially raised hills, the so-called terps, to protect them from the regular storm surges. These terps are still the characteristic feature of the Halligen today.

The traditional way of life on the Halligen was characterized by self-sufficiency. The residents kept sheep and cows for milk, butter, cheese and wool, and fished and grew vegetables on higher ground. Most men worked as sailors or whalers, while the women took care of agriculture and livestock breeding. Today, the Halligen are particularly well-known for their salt marshes, which play an important role in the Wadden Sea ecosystem and serve as a breeding and resting place for numerous bird species.

One of the largest and most famous Halligen is Hooge. Around 120 people live here on ten mounds. Hooge offers visitors an insight into the traditional way of life of the Hallig inhabitants and is home to attractions such as the Königspesel, a museum that displays living spaces decorated with elaborate Delft tiles.

The Halligen are not only an example of human adaptability to extreme environmental conditions, but also a valuable natural area and a popular destination for tourists who want to experience the peace and unique landscape of the Wadden Sea.

The sheep have become accustomed to pedestrians and cyclists. If you're careful, everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery. The only hassle is getting through the gates. But on a beautiful day, it's worth it.
