The Esslingen Castle towers over the historic old town of Esslingen am Neckar with its characteristic silhouette of Hochwacht, Seilergang and Thick Tower - and yet it was never a castle.
Description
The Esslingen Castle towers over the historic old town of Esslingen am Neckar with its characteristic silhouette of Hochwacht, Seilergang and Thick Tower - and yet it was never a castle.
Knights and princesses never lived in the Esslingen Castle - it was only the part of the massive city fortifications that was pushed furthest to the north. First mentioned in a document in 1314, the fortifications of the imperial city of Esslingen were further expanded between 1519 and 1531.
The Thick Tower was built in 1527, but only received its dome in 1887 based on the model of the Nuremberg castle towers. In 1976/77, the Big Tower and the castle's outdoor facilities were thoroughly renovated for the city's 1200th anniversary.
Castle Square
The Inner Castle Square with its fountain and beech-lined flowerbeds is modeled on medieval paradise gardens. Circular flowerbeds set into the lawn dominate the Outer Castle Square. Every summer, exquisite open-air events take place there, including open-air cinema, classical, jazz and rock concerts. The view over the city and the Neckar Valley to the Swabian Alb is extremely impressive. The short climb from the castle can be easily taken via the path through the vineyard.
A large children's playground on the Outer Castle Square is ideal for the little ones.
Enjoying Esslingen Castle
In the warm months, summer can be perfectly enjoyed at the numerous events on the Castle Square in a dreamlike setting. The visit to the castle is rounded off with a delicious champagne tasting in KESSLER Karree 18, the oldest champagne cellar in Germany.

Very popular as a wedding location.
First take impressive pictures with the photographer in the castle courtyard, then have a banquet in the Big Tower. It is not normally open for business,
but can be rented for family celebrations for 50 people. (Esslingen live, Kultur und Kongress GmbH)
