The Albergue San Nicolás at Puente Fitero is located on the Camino de Santiago between Burgos and Leon, not far from the Rio Pisuerga.
The building consists of a bare rectangular elongated chapel in Gothic style
It has recently been restored by the Confraternity of San Jacopo di Compostela (based in Italy, in Perugia), with the aim of reviving the meaning of pilgrimage in a spirit of sobriety and solidarity.
The hostel has 12 beds and resumes an ancient hospitality tradition, started in the 12th century, according to which pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela were welcomed.
Today many pilgrims stop their steps here and find care for their often injured feet, a hot shower, a well to wash clothes, a bed, a dinner prepared and consumed with hospitaleros and an opportunity for prayer. Characteristic is the traditional ritual of washing the feet, just before dinner.
