The Roman Catholic basilica of Mariazell is the most important place of pilgrimage in Austria and also significant beyond the country's borders. A Gothic church with a striking pointed arch portal was built here in the 14th century. The central tower is 90 meters high and the largest bell in Styria rings in it. She weighs 5,702 kilograms. The bell tower is bordered on the left and right by two other towers that were built in the course of the Baroque era in the 17th century.

The first monk's cell, Mariazell
According to tradition, the founding of Mariazell is attributed to a Benedictine monk named Magnus, who was sent by his mother monastery of St. Lambrecht to be a pastor for the shepherds in the area around today's Mariazell. His path then led him up a hill to the place where the pilgrimage basilica now stands. There he placed the wooden figure of Mary on a tree trunk and built a wooden cell above it, which served as his chapel and living space.
Mary in the (monk's) cell gave this place its name. It is reported that prayers were soon answered here and Mariazell became the destination of many people seeking help. The year of the foundation, 1157, cannot be clearly proven historically, but a papal document points to this time.
