    La Grande Chartreuse, the Great Charterhouse, is the mother monastery of the Carthusian Order. It is an impressive and unique facility. It cannot be visited, but you can walk around it. Definitely worth it. The film "The Great Silence" was filmed here. There is a museum further down the valley.

                The old saw mill of the Monastery of the Grand Chartreuse is a beautiful building.

                  There are 2 viewpoints overlooking this monastery. Starting from the Correrie (large car park 45.392821, 5.757661), follow the GR de Pays (Chartreuse tower), which runs along the north and overlooks the monastery. Be careful in winter, frozen snow ravines may require equipment (ice axe and crampons). Then you reach the Col de la Ruchère and an easy descent via the Habère de Billon, all wild and beautiful. For the more "strong", the Petit and Grand Som are just waiting for you ;-))
